Advocating for Blind Americans

The National Federation of the Blind is a powerful voice for advocacy, opportunity, and equality for blind Americans. We are committed to fighting for the rights of blind individuals and empowering them to achieve independence. Every year, we travel to Washington, D.C., to meet with Congressional representatives in order to educate them on critical issues that affect blind people across the nation. Our advocacy efforts focus on ensuring that legislative changes support the needs and rights of blind children and adults.

Beyond national efforts, the National Federation of the Blind also works within states to push for state-level legislation that enhances opportunities and accessibility for blind individuals. By directly engaging with lawmakers, we continue to strengthen the cause of blind Americans at all levels of government.

Current Legislative Priorities for Blind Americans

The National Federation of the Blind works on a range of legislative issues critical to the blind community. We focus on advocating for policies that promote equal access to education, employment, transportation, healthcare, and technology. By meeting with Congress and presenting these issues, we help ensure that legislators understand the importance of these changes for blind Americans. The Capitol switchboard will connect you to your representative or senator’s office. If you're unsure of who your representative is, visit www.house.gov and enter your zip code to find them. Alternatively, you can contact your local public library for assistance in locating the right contact information.
